January 23, 2015 (Yellowknife, NT) – Two former members of NWTASSA and the Yellowknife Speed Skating Club have been named to their respective provincial Canada Winter Games Short Track teams.

Jessica Marsh who started her speed skating career with the Yellowknife Speed Skating Club has qualified for Team Saskatchewan.  Jessica and her family moved to Saskatoon when she was 8 years old, but has kept in contact with her northern roots through the speed skating community.  Shane Clark, CWG coach for Team NWT recently coached Jessica at a meet at the Calgary Olympic Oval this past fall when no Saskatchewan coach was able to attend.  Her older brother, Michael Marsh, skates full time at the oval after also getting his start in Yellowknife, then pursuing his competitive goals ever since in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The second Yellowknife Speed Skating Club alumnus is Simon Young who has been named to the Nova Scotia Short Track Team.  Simon skated many years with the Yellowknife club starting out in the Learn to Speed Skate group in 2004 with coaches Mike Vaydik and Jill Gilday.  Simon and his family moved to Nova Scotia when he was a member of the Yellowknife club’s Junior Competitive group.  He showed great potential at that age, attending local and provincial competitions in Alberta with Junior Competitive coach, Shane Clark.

NWTASSA congratulates these two young athletes and looks forward to a successful CWG experience for them both.
